hmm, some deep thoughts eh?:P ...dunno how right this is but the prefix hypo- seems to imply a state that can change... so the needle moves from outside to the inside whereas if you said a subcutaneous needle it seems like the needle is always under the skin. So hypodermic is used more as a description of an object, where subcutaneous is used as a location... in other thoughts, who were the geniuses that named a driveway what we park on and a parkway what we drive on..
