i can already see Len in his high socks and flared nostrils berating me for not understanding the minimum alveolar concentration differences for halothane vs isoflurane...
ahh...the life of a 4th year. should've seen it coming eh?

1245 in the wee hours (no more daylight savings whoopee!) and im procrastinating again. first time ive been on facebook for weeks..first time in months ive posted on my blog.

heres a little snippet of what i spent my day doing:

2 endless hours of diagnostic imaging lectures with jenny's imaginascope to look at radiographs and ultrasounds
2 hours of equine on some form of gastro disease that has managed to find its way completely out of my brain despite having only learnt it a couple hours ago (something about gastric-duodenal ulcerative syndrome?!)
then i spent my afternoon feeling up rams..yup.. palpating ram's testicles and comparing them to the ball-chain (haha..), not to mention extruding their slimy penis..

joy joy..tomorrow we're looking at bulls bits too..more repro!

i guess its about time that i posted up pictures of the fabulous trip to exmouth and ningaloo reef that i went on with Anthony and Kelvin.
These a couple of the pictures i took, will post up some of the underwater ones that kelvin took with his waterproof camera when i get them off him.
Spent most of out trip soaked and pickled in salt water. 2 days diving and seeing the unimaginably colourful and creative undersea lifeforms. Best of all were the 8!!! whale sharks we saw and snorkeled with. Not forgetting the pod of dolphins we snorkeled with, the humpback whales that came up to the boat, the manta rays and dugongs we saw from the boat, and countless turtles we swam with.

1. 16 long long hours to exmouth
2. feral cows are really dangerous and they're everywhere on the road between canarvon and exmouth. Imagine the damage that kind of roadkill would cause!

i have to say that it was my ultimate favourite movie...bar none!
no matter how old i might be, it'll always bring me back to my childhood..
back when life was fun...

i guess it was the movie that started my fascination with the sea and the amazing aquatic life...so now that i can scuba dive, i guess i'm one step closer to being a mermaid? now all i have to do is find a crab and a flounder to be my best friends..

seems like nowadays my future seems a little more uncertain

so many life-changing decisions to be made
its so exciting, confounding, confusing and downright bewildering!

i guess theres something to be said of the finality of graduating. no longer is your life all sorted out for you in terms of semesters and units. you now have to plan things well ahead of time, think of others rather than just yourself, anticipate the future...

if this is all part of growing up, i'm not sure i ever want to

well into my 3rd year. next semester ill be 1/2 way thru. what then? do i start thinking of jobs, marriage, family and the like? seems like i'm thinking too far ahead. or am i? 21 years old, a lifetime ahead of me. i ask the age-old question: what IS God's plan for my life? what path does He want me to take?

its all too hard!
y cant i just concentrate on the upcoming 3 exams, rather than trying to look into a crystal ball to see my life 3 years down the track?

i'm indoors on a nice warm spring afternoon doing my 2 lab reports in the middle of my study break, with my mind on the garage sale, neglecting my dog who has just dug a hole in the backyard, whilist wishing i was in the sun, or driving down south to a vineyard with james, wishing that my exams werent drawing nearer with each passing breath, wondering if i should go watch a movie with my classmates, wanting to be at the beach and take pictures, and stare up at the sun, or watch senseless dvds with paris hilton the plastic face as the star, or maybe to go shopping in the bright morning sunshine, cant wait to watch the greyhounds tommorrow, and yet again, worrying about the garage sale and if anyone will turn up, hoping that my LC will bond and be comitted, reminding myself that i need to buy boots and wellingtons and also to do lots of work before its all due next week

SINGAPORE : Three animal rights activists with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have been deported.

They had planned to hold a demonstration outside a KFC restaurant along Rochor Road.

There was no demonstration.

PETA's executive director Jason Baker, an American, and 20-year-old Canadian Ashley Fruno had planned to hold a naked demonstration outside the KFC restaurant - wearing just a banner - to protest against what they called the fast food chain's abusive treatment of chickens.

In a statement, police said they received a call on Thursday afternoon about suspicious behaviour. When they arrived, they found two banners in the woman's possession. Police said she was reported to have cooped herself in a chicken cage clad in a yellow bikini in Bangkok and went topless outside a KFC outlet in Canada. Separately, police on Friday received another call about a Filipino woman, Astudilo Sonia Gueverra, behaving suspiciously in Bencoolen Street.

Based on their profile and records, police assessed they would all be participating as PETA activists in an anti-KFC campaign without a permit. Immigration authorities had cancelled their Social Visit Passes and they were asked to leave Singapore by Friday.

At least two of them were believed to have left the country on a flight on Friday at about 3pm. The police statement added it would not allow any individuals or groups whose presence may compromise its security arrangements for the IMF/World Bank meetings. - CNA /ls

And i find it interesting that i know so many of the verses yet i find it so hard to practice them. Here are 2 of my grestest problems and the verses in Matthew chap 6 and 7 that speak about it. Clearly God is trying to reveal them to me again. Amazing how seemingly 'dead' words on a page can speak so clearly to you sometimes.

kings club was on a couple weeks back..ive got pics of the cutest kids that i luuurve to bits..esp winston, north and luke..all my liddle boys!!!

last week of the hols was spent sleeping, watching dvds, trying my darnest to do my farm report, which ended up 18 pages long excluding the apenddices, and ferrying dad around

1st week of school was...slack(ish)..no labs
ive got this cool unit called animals and society and its incredibly fun. Tabs is gonna be my lab demonstrator in the cattle section..hehe..
its all about animal handling and its practical so we get to manhandle cow, sheep, pigs, dogs, u name it, we've got it. YES, murdoch uni now has 2 donkeys! hehe

then we had murdoch stall day and xmas in july
which were both awesome
when God works, He works in wonderous ways!
murdoch got lots of contacts those 2 days and we're all praying that they'll stick

2nd week of uni
mum was away at sydney for a conference and she came back with krispy kremes..joy-oh-joy!
note on todays practical class, we spent 1.5 hours hacking away at testicles and penises...crude as it sounds, it really is fascinating!
cant wait for animals and society prac on wed!!! we've got a stallion mating

Windsong Valley Alpaca Farm 3-7 July 2006
Think Sound of Music scenery, but without Julie Andrews and nuns. Put in neighbouring farms with less than nothing on pasture, and youve got Windsong The weather has been terrible of late. Driest winter in ages. Windsong has irrigation from 3 dams so their pasture at least has some semblance of greenery.

a cria is a baby alpaca, and this one is such a cutie. there were a couple of births a few weeks back, so there were little crias all over the place

this is Nmiska, who had her eye removed the week before (which another vet student witnessed but i missed!! darn!) due to a tumour pressing on it. shes got a cria on foot but seems to be getting along just fine. its hilarious to creep up on her blind side and scare her though..hehe

vaccinations on the male weanlings across the road with Ross and Shelley. . u should here them squeal like little girls when the needle goes it

there was supposed to be a pic with me carrying a cria, but stupid blogger is malfunctioning and i cant be stuffed!

my 1st farm prac is over and done with.
i told paulette that i wanted to drop by during shearing time in oct to see how the animals where sheared, apparently, its an experience not to be missed (anyone wants to come with me?)
i initially intended to upload more pics, but my connection let me down, and all the hard work on the farm damepened my mood to take nice pics, so ive got a limited number of them.
all i can say now is that alpacas are not as offensive as one initally thinks they are. yes they spit and kick, but hey, so do kids! they are heaps better than sheep anytime!

i became one of those soccer mums today...except.. i was a netball sister
haha
me and my dog (sounds like a song title) took a walk to lynettes school and we caught her netball game against Parkwood Primary.
she aint half bad too.. (but that must because she is related to moi)
so it was me and marzo, and some other netball mom cheering on Bullcreek Primary. And they won!

on another note, i reckon marzo might still have a chance at actually becoming a waterdog like his breed suggests.
he was having the time of his life splashing thru the stream in the park and though he got all muddy, i hadnt the heart to drag him away. this coming from the dog that cringes away form the shoreline.

i had a good time with my dog today meeting new people and bus drivers, and watching a primary school netball match...how did your day go?

Here’s a little story about a little enzyme

You might require a little background in biochemistry to fully catch the gist of what I’m about to say.

G6PD deficiency. A common enzyme deficiency that is a genetic sex-linked recessive disorder. Meaning that more males are affected than females, and that the disorder only presents in a female when she has both recessive genes from her parents, and presents always in a male if he has even only one of the recessive genes.

People with G6PD have a shortage of the enzyme Glucose 6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase. An enzyme that is the major rate-limiting regulator of the Pentose Phosphate Cycle. Its starting substrate is glucose 6-phosphate from hexokinase, and through the oxidative pathway, carbons are returned to glycolysis at fructose 6-phosphate and glyceraldehydes 3-phosphate. The oxidative phase of the pathway generates reducing power in the form of NADPH, which is essential for detoxification within the body and is used in reductive synthesis, such as the synthesis of fatty acids, cholesterol and in fatty acid elongation.
Foods such as broad beans contain many oxidants, G6PD sufferers often cannot consume such foods because in states of oxidative stress, stress is placed on the pentose phosphate pathway through the usage of glutathione and the enzyme glucose 6-phosphate dehyrdogenase cannot keep up. This may even lead to renal failure.

The interesting thing about G6PD is that it has a positive link with malaria the same way sickle cell anemia has. So people with G6PD deficiency are less likely to suffer from malaria than those without. This is probably why this recessive disease has not died out over the centuries since sufferers have a distinct evolutionary advantage in malaria prone countries.

Its amazing to see biochemistry and genetics play out in real life!

ive been neglecting my man abit too much these days and hes letting me know it..
so on my busiest day of the week, he broke thru to the back garden and destroyed my mums plants, and he dug a humongous hole in the ground, so deep it went under the paving.
he is a very very silly dog

but thursday was still a very interesting day for me!
started off at 630 when i woke up
by 730 i was at uni (way too early) and by 8 i was feeding and watering sheep, afterwhich we got to check them for an eye infection and medicate the affected ones. all of which i did outta the goodness of my heart, or rather, cos it was fun! GoMedical is having some sheep experimentations for Naltraxone and ben suggested i help out, so i am!
went to class at 930 smelling strongly of sheep poo
school was long and boring, and i was so tired, i even fell asleep during one of the most entertaining lecturers lectures
lab was fun cos w gotta go down to the barn again and play with cows, goats sheep and a horse
so now i smelt of other barnyard animal poo
(have to admit, i kinda like the smell of sheep food pellets, such a wholsome grainy odour)
when i came back, lynette told me abt marzos escapade and how he somehow managed to get hold of a baby bird, a fledgling. A new holland honeyeater as i later discovered. Anyway, lynette rescued it from the evil clutches of marzo the bird chomping monster (personally, i think he was just trying to make friends) and we put it in a shoebox and fed it later at nite with honey thru a syringe. it was the cutest thing. but it had a retarded left leg, prob from marzo.
this morn after uni i brought the now happily chirping little birdie to Native Arc down at Bibra Lake which is a wildlife rehabilation centre where ive volunteered at b4. Thought it might be best for the bird, but i left feeling so unsatisfied! A man took the bird, asked me to fill in some forms abt where i found it, and then tat was it! i didnt even get any info abt how badly injured it was!
hopefully, the bird lives and its leg heals.
if only i was already educated in the finer points of bird healing, but im not a vet yet, if not i would have kept the little thing, was already on the verge of naming it.

so its been another busy week

back from the mia of monkeys on monday..

tuesday was study day, physiology quiz up soon

wednesday was dissection day...

as was thursday..(we've got this anatomy project to be done.. where we dissect a portion of a dog, in my case, lumber vertebrae to caudal vert, do a labelled diagram, and a short write-up. Thats worth only 15%..but me and my partner have spent 20 hours on it already!)

friday was a bit of a break when i went out with alicia and ailing and her friends, not to mention OCF after

saturday was sport then fishing at night (no, not sport fishing) till laaattee...

on sunday my rellies arrived...aunty and uncle and then hey presto!

its monday again! im drinking canned soup outta a pot whlist everyone else is out having fun..and marzo jus peed on the fan..what the?!

yes...arguing is family sport as James found out over the 4 days. we argue for fun, we argue to occupy our time during the 10 hour drive, we argue jus for the sake of arguing..

my poor baby went under the scapel today

now hes 2 bits less of a dog

one undescended testicle and $400 later, marzo is home with stitches down his abdomen, a huge collar, painkillers and a week's worth of antibiotics.

sillly doggie peed on his stitches so theres a risk of infections thus the antibiotics...
and hes in pain
and that huge collar just has him crashing into everything in the house

..at least he gets to stay in the house for a couple of days.

1 more week to study break...cant wait for it..im intending to get down to some SERIOUS study

2nd year 1st sem is no picnic...(altho i did jus go to one this afternoon at mathilda bay with james and the soons ..[sounds like the name of a bad band eh?]).....its more like a long drawn out lunch with an annoying distant relation that jus refuses to leave and makes you pay..

i dont even think i was this stressed out during O levels...phew..

lessons to be learnt from a vet

i know what kinda vet i wanna be.............a good one

one who doesnt give snide remarks about the behaviour of your (badly-behaved) dog
one who is understanding and gives your dog time to calm down before trying anything with him
one who can differentiate a haltie from a muzzle
one who trusts the owner to handle her dog

just brought marzo back from the vets to get a consultation about his de-sexing..
and marzo was a complete embarrasment to me !

imagine...a 2nd year vet student who would one day treat animals, having (qoute) 'a quite badly behaved dog'. one of the worst of his breed i'd bet..

marzo was growling at the golden retriver at the clinic, sniffing everything, jumping up onto the reception counter, shoving his face into people's crotches, refusing to obey orders, refusing to lie down on the ground (this coming from a dog and rolls over and surrenders all day long for a belly rub?!), wriggling all over the place.
Damn did he piss me off!!!!!

what didnt help was the vet..

this young aussie girl who looked no older than some of my classmates. (im not condemming age bcos when im practicing im sure that some people would judge me the same way.)
what irked me was that she was the opposite of all the attributes i listed above!
she tried to physically turn marzo over, not allowing me first to try. and of cos marzo got all excited and struggle as we might, he jus refused to go belly-up. she tried to listen to his heart. did she even ask me to keep him still? no...she whipped out her stethescope and tried to do it on her own. well obviously marzo wasnt going to oblige, he tried to lick her on the face instead. i mean, c'mon girlie! i reckon the owner can handle the dog better than u with all your experience. when im a vet im gonna learn to first ask the owners permission to handle his/her animal, ask him/her to if the animal minds other people handling it 1st before trying anything.

so maybe she didnt do anything WRONG per say. but it just irked me...i was annoyed. mainly at marzo for being the worst dog in the world and embarrsing m..a bloody would-be vet,
but also at the little things i saw that vet do.

out of the 3 vets ive seen at bullcreek vet hosp, ive only liked one. the male doctor. he had a way with marzo and he was the only one who did not talk down to me but treated me as an equal when he found out i was studying vet. he even gave me tips on how to survive through vet school. mebbe marzo jus behaves for men? the other two gave me the impression that they wanted to do it all on their own....

i am dissatisfied with the level of service i am receiving from Bullcreek Veterinary Hospital. mebbe i should just send marzo to murdoch uni vet

epiphany:
the male vet did not view me as just an owner of the patient, but almost as the patient itself. the 2 female vets saw marzo as a patient, but completely excluded the owner as being part of the deal, thus explaining the difference in attitudes.

lessons learnt:
things never to do in future practice, dont be like that girl,
and hope to God that i dont get a patient like marzo.

its so easy to get caught up in the world

this has always been a struggle for me. i always want to be the best, i always want to do what everyone is doing, i always want to be the best at what everyone is doing

its just too easy to get caught up in the world

You see everyone around you in the world and they seem to be having fun. Thats my trap. I always want to be having FUN. And theres a danger in that. Everyone around seems to be having more fun than me it seems. Events in uni like Vet camp, so much fun to be had, but dangerous drunken fun. Its a hedonistic lifestyle that i catch glimpses of and sometimes desire, but that i know better now than to get myself into. Longings that God wisely reminds me to ignore. Thank God for good christian friends and a good support network like OCF and Subi to keep tabs on me and whom i know will never allow me to fall back into the trap that is the world and its worldly desires.

You always hear pple saying that vet is a competitive course. But you never really realise what they mean till you're in the course and in with the creme de la creme of WA's top students and brillant international students. Everything is a race in vet, even more now in 2nd year. It's always a case of who gets the better mark, who is 'kiasu' enough (they call it passion for the subject..bah..) to get as much experience as they can, who can take part in the most events.
I hate to admit it but i have gotten caught up in all of that too.
Just looking around at my friends. So many of them have worked through the holidays. Some have had vet nurse duties in vet clinics, others have helped out in research projects cutting open and sewing close sheep. So many of my classmates have steady part time jobs within the industry. I, on the other hand, spent only some of last semester looking for a job as a vet nurse, and even then i didnt get it.
I'm seriously considering getting a vet nurse job this sem. It would prob take up my holidays, some evenings and possibly some weekends. But i'm hesitating upon the advice of some friends in the upper years. They say that the workload in 2nd year 1st sem might be abit too heavy for a job. Now i'm stuck. To look for a job or not? there is an opening in South street Vet that sounds promising. I want the money and most importantly, the experience. How issit that i have no idea how to even suture when my friends have already assisted in spays??

It's not just the job, theres so much i wanna do in uni itself that i dont even know if i have the time. I'm already in the Murdoch Uni Wildlife Association, but now i wannt join the Equine Interest Group. These groups have the most interesting events, talks and opportunities. But it also means more commitment. More precious time, of which i have so little of. This weekend MUWA has this thing going on when u go down south to help trap raptors.. IMAGINE THAT! how cool is that!?! But once again, i cant go. I dont have the time. Commitments at home, to my dog, and at church and to OCF. I guess thats the difference between an international student and a local.

Ive got so much on my plate this year. Crossroads, OCF, school, MUWA, church. And theres so much more i want: a job, EIG.

The problem with me is that i don't know when to stop.
Look out for me if you know me, cos apparently i cant even look out for myself.

yup..you read right..the outside temp is above body temp..

it really is way too hot to do work....and i spent 2 hours today in a comp lab racking my brains trying to figure out biochemistry questions...at least it was air conditioned

its been really good these past 2 days..
uni has started and its good meeting up with all your mates and seeing their new haircuts and all..i've missed them
seeing the freshies i met at Oday..
eating at the asian lunch van again..(ooo the spicy chicken)

seeing nick's and aaron's new place..its got a pool. a barbie and dvds of stand-up comedy..what more could any guy want?

another thing ..i was thinking of joining Murdoch Christian Union this year..they've got this Vet Bible Study thing on Fridays. and my timetable is pretty slack on Fri's..only 1 hour of lectures..why not learn more about the Gospel instead?

the good thing abt having vet students as your mates is that they dont mind u bringing your dog with you anywhere..yest was khartiks bday and marzo came along too..
speaking of which.....
marzo is lying on the cool tiled floor next to me panting and leaving drool trails.. he's actually picking up new tricks pretty quickly nowadays..one trick i want him to learn is to stop barking..
and so..i got him a anti-barking collar yest...
i think it hurt me more than him when he first barked and got static shocked. he lept straight up into the air, all four feet at once and he had this expression of total confusion..aww..my poor baby!
